1950's ivory cream formal dress with the most stunning design. This dress has a wide v-neck and back that dips low to the hook and eye and metal zip closure. The fabric is so silky soft with a tonal lined texture. It has really thoughtful high end construction with gussets under the arm for ease of movement and a two tiered skirt. The most distinctive feature of the dress is this rounded double band tie that goes around the waist, over the zipper in back and clamps in the front with the sparkling rhinestone shapes. This is a really unique feature, the rhinestone clamps are not totally symmetrical which is clearly intentional and make it look so interesting. They dangle at the bottom with large oval gems in the center of each. The outside skirt has deep pleats radiating from the center around to the back. The dress is fully lined and the under skirt is more straight and the silky stripe fabric under peeks out a tiny bit from the pleated skirt when worn. The double skirt design does give the bottom more volume creating the perfect 50s silhouette. This dress is perfect for many occasions but would work beautifully as a bridal or wedding piece - maybe a reception or honeymoon dress or for a less formal wedding dress.
The tag is one I love to see, it is from the Salt Lake City high end retailer of the 50s "Rayomond's" which has the coolest tag. There is also an order tag in the back zipper panel that could indicate this dress was custom made or altered by the shop. I'm so pleased with how this restoration turned out. It had some yellowing and was a bit dirty when I got the dress but I did two soaks - dried and pressed after the first one but then I decided I could get it lighter and the second soak did the trick. Now the dress is as clean as can be. I still see just the very slightest bit of yellowing but it's really only on the under dress and pretty much unseen or not at all noticeable when worn. No holes, stains or odors. The only flaw to report is that in my soaking and restoration a few of the rhinestones did come out. I didn't even notice until I was preparing it to store, but there is one stone missing at the top of each clamp - you have to look very closely to even notice. In no way distracts from the amazing presentation of this dress.
Size is a modern XS-S or around a size 4. The measurements are as follows:
Bust - 34.5"
Waist - 25.5"
Hips - 39"
Shoulder to waist - 14.75" (better for someone more petite or short waisted)
Waist to hem - 21" underskirt 20.5" overskirt
