Late 1950's red velvet 2-piece skirt suit or skirt set. The skirt set features a beautiful sleeveless top with a scoop neckline and a metal zipper 3/4 of the way down the back. It likely was worn with a top underneath originally, but I've shown it without and I think it works either way. The top has a little more of a late 50s to early 60s silhouette, kind of boxy but still a lovely shape with diagonal darts on either side at the bust. It is lined at the top and the velvet is a stunning soft 100% cotton. The skirt is a classic 50s pencil shape with thoughtful darts in front and back creating a really figure flattering shape. It has a metal side zipper closure with a button at the side and is lined 2/3 of the way down in back. There's a pleat at the bottom of the skirt for easy movement. These pieces have a really beautiful impact worn together but each could be worn separately as well. I've shown it tucked and untucked for your reference.
Brand tag says "Mary Hayes" of California and there is size and fabric information as well as a union tag under the brand tag on the skirt. Condition is excellent! I fixed a few places where the stitching had come out around the top of the shoulders and there was a tiny rip at the top of the back pleat of the skirt which I have repaired so you wouldn't even know this was a problem. After a wash this set smells so much better - it had been stored in a chest with moth balls, now you can hardly detect that smell, but if my face is right in there I can still pick up a faint scent of that, and it will fade more over time. Lovely condition, presents beautifully, many years of wear to go.
Size is a modern small or around a size 4. I've shown it here on my size 4 model who is 32/24.5/36 and it was a darling fit on her unpinned. The measurements are as follows:

Bottom hem - 36.5"
Length - 22.25"
Skirt:
Waist - 25.5"
Hips - 37.25"
Length - 24" with over 2" seam allowance
