1950's formal 2-piece dress set by Ann Kauffman. This is such a special dress set. The dress has a timeless 50s fit and flare silhouette with a fitted bodice, dolman cap sleeve with no shoulder seam, nipped waist with big pleats in the front of the skirt, very thoughtfully arranged for beautiful fullness when worn. The most distinctive part of this dress is the neckline, it has a square shape and is made from a matching ornate lace with inlaid rhinestones and pearls throughout. This detail really elevates the dress and the other very formal feature is the fabric. It is hard to explain or show just how pretty it is in person. I looks like a dark maroon, but in certain lights it also looks navy blue and has an iridescent quality which is so pretty and unique. Closure is a metal side zipper. The little matching jacket has amazing 50s design with a long collar down the deep v-neck front. It comes tight in the waist with a hook and eye and there is a peplum all the way around the bottom. My favorite feature of the jacket is the pointed sleeve cuffs - they have double dramatic points and are SO cool! The two make quite the statement together but I've shown the dress alone as well as that lace rhinestone neckline is so stunning!
The brand tag says "Ann Kauffman" a designer I have had the pleasure to restore a number of times and every dress I've had from this label is a high fashion head turner. Condition is excellent. Both pieces have been soaked and steamed and are clean as can be. The dress needed reinforcing of the seam under the arms which I did. Remarkably there are no rhinestones or pearls missing. The rhinestones do vary in color, most are on the more grey side with some being a bit more silver, but it looks cool to me. The jacket has a little scuff of the fabric, size of a pinhead on the right upper sleeve. There is a tiny hole at the bottom of the sleeve cuff where it folds which I stitched and is totally unseen when worn and not going anywhere. It looks to me like a broach or pin was worn sometimes on the left collar and you have to look very close to see where it was pinned, but I wanted to make note of it. You can barely see where the stitches are on the left sleeve that tack the dramatic pointed cuffs. As you can see, these are very minor flaws and the dress set presents beautifully with many years or wear to go.
